SEMINAR ON PARENTING TEENS

A seminar “ Get Ready for Being a Teen’s Parent” was conducted for parents of classes 5 to 8 by Udgam Pro Activity Club on Oct 17. The seminar hall (library) was packed with over 50 participants.

Our guest speaker Mr. Anurag Mehta, Founder of Teenage Wisdom shared some strategies with parents that…..

• Avoid arguments and fights with the child
• Understand and accept their behavioural changes
• Keep the home place safe and protected where the child find extra care and acceptance
• Give unconditional love just by giving a warm hug or kiss on the cheek; it will boost their confidence
• Listen to your child; give attention whether the talk is important or not. With this they will come to you in future if they are stuck somewhere
• Some parents have too much expectation from their children and being over ambitious they don’t appreciate child’s efforts and unknowingly give mental and physical pressure
• Don’t react immediately, wait patiently until an opportunity will arise for you to deal with the situation
• Constantly screaming will damage their emotions, treat your child with honor and respect at all times
• Value their opinion and involve them in household activities
• Make allowances for their daily minor mistakes
• Let your child know that you are always available for them

At the end, he told parents that there will be significant changes when child enters teen years. Research proves that parents who play a supportive role in teen years make a difference in their child’s development and achievement. Disrespectful or rude behavior in teenagers is pretty common. However, this phase will pass eventually so just be relax and see your child from a different point of view.

Seminar for Parents on Managing Childs Negative Emotions

A very informative seminar on “Understanding & Managing Child’s Negative Emotions” was organized by Udgam Pro Activity Club for parents of classes 1 to 3 on Oct 10th.

Our guest speaker Dr. Swapna Palkar, a child psychologist, advised parents to understand child’s tantrums and see what’s wrong with the child. Tantrums may happen when kids are tired, hungry, or uncomfortable; or because they can’t get what they want.

Being a parent one may feel embarrassed and ashamed when the child is whining, crying, screaming, kicking and hitting in front of others. She advised mothers not to label the child and handle the situation calmly as showing tantrums are a normal part of child development.

She gave tips to parents like the need to give clear explanations instead of saying ‘no’, how to divert their minds and if still they are uncontrollable then to simply leave the place for a while. She asked them to identify the roots of child’s temperament, give honest feedback and instruct not repeat the unusual act in future.

Parents who attended the seminar expressed a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure from the information received.
